I’m constantly curious about how I’ll evolve as a leader. When someone becomes a leader, do they change, or will they stay the same? What qualities do you need to be a successful leader? I have several questions about the characteristics of a leader, and in this editorial note, I will attempt to address them.
We all know that leadership positions come with many obligations and duties that need an immense amount of time and effort. But what if you’re not that person with those traits, and you end up in a leadership position?
Unwritten norms govern society and must be followed to be successful. We attempt to trust them and follow them. But what about innovation and distinctiveness if everyone starts doing it? Whether you’re a leader or not, being accountable for your work is a quality that everyone should have. When you become a leader, though, “responsible” is more than simply a word on your LinkedIn page; you are in charge of your job and that of your subordinates.
Authenticity, in my opinion, takes you places and establishes friendships that last a lifetime. Once in a leadership position, most people tend to change their original conduct and attitude. If it works for them, that’s fantastic. However, I believe that being honest and unique contributes much to making your time as a leader golden.
Assume you’re a happy person who always has a good time at work and has a unique relationship with each coworker. You get promoted to the team leader post one fine day, which is wonderful. What’s different now? Your responsibilities have grown in quantity, and you now have a team to lead and guide.
Does this cause you to alter your behavior towards your team? Does the fact that you’re a leader makes you chat and joke less with your coworkers? Does the fact that you’re a leader forbid you from having fun? If yes, you have lost your identity because of a new position. What happens next? Your coworkers or subordinates will notice your shift in behavior, and their attitude toward you will also change. This may appear insignificant, but it could have a long-term impact on your team’s work quality.
A leader, in my opinion, should keep their unique personality and establish pleasant relationships with their coworkers. The only adjustment that must be made is your attitude toward your task. Yes, delegate tasks to your teammates and expect satisfactory results. But keep in mind that while work will always be there, relationships are delicate. Good relations ensure good teamwork.
